Notes From Logan

My Favorite Tools and Recovery

by Logan Enright, CTS - The Enright Company

LoganMy favorite consumer electronics tools/toys have changed.  For the past 5 years it was just the regular old iPod – simple, easy to operate and very well constructed. Combined with iTunes, it has provided HOURS of listening pleasure. I have music on in the background CONSTANTLY – 15,000 songs carefully arranged by genre, etc.

But now I must say the Samsung S3 smartphone has taken center stage. Although I will admit having AirPlay at home is pretty cool - with the ability to stream wireless audio or video to an AirPlay compatible receiver  from either my iPad or PC is great too.

However that S3 (and therefore their other sized devices in the same family), which I got the first day of issue, is amazing. The whole Droid OS is really a joy and keeps getting better. It’s unfathomable to think of all the things we can do now on these devices.  For instance, the S3 automatically knows where you are going next (if you use its calendar) and displays time to that location and traffic.
Got an iPad this year and find it fine, but somewhat limiting and clunky in its ability to open MS docs (of course) and hard to manage copying/pasting and documents.  While in Korea this year notice just about everyone on the subways carrying a 7” Samsung Droid. I love the Droid OS.

Thanks to all for your concern about the knee injury I had in August. Ironically, I fell after missing the bottom step while carrying a 42” LCD at home – ruptured the quad tendon and broke a rib.  After months of physical therapy and time, it’s getting much better. I thank all our team and our manufacturers for covering for me while down.

In this edition of Scanlines, we feature a great application from Vaddio, Hall’s new audio extractor product, our announcement of Integrator’s Choice racks, ICE Cable and Clarus Glassboards. Thanks for reading Scanlines!

Hall Research Introduces HDMI Audio Extractor with EDID Managment

EMX-HD-AUD diagnoses and analyzes HDMI problems

by Jason Housel - The Enright Company

JasonHall Research (www.hallresearch.com) has released the Model EMX-HD-AUD Audio Extractor for HDMI with EDID management, cable equalization, audio and video status indication, and USB port for connection to a PC. This versatile device can be used to extract digital and analog audio from HDMI, extend HDMI cable length, pass-thru or learn EDID from any display, and re-clock both TMDS video and DDC data. The EMX-HD-AUD resolves many system level HDMI signal-chain issues by acting as an intelligent intermediary allowing incompatible components to function properly.

The EMX-HD-AUD can also diagnose and analyze HDMI problems. Multi-color LED's on the unit indicate EDID routing and provide real-time indication of the HDMI video and audio types. The audio outputs include both analog and multi-channel digital TOSLINK. Each of the audio outputs can be independently muted, including the audio in the HDMI output.

HallResearchThe EMX-HD-AUD constructs an EDID table (capabilities list) for the source either from internal memory or from the connected output. The internal EDID data can be "learned" from the output, or uploaded to it from a PC via the USB port. Free Windows™ PC software is available on the product's website that allows reading, saving, manipulating, and writing EDID tables to and from the unit.
The EMX-HD-AUD is HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 (deep-color and 3D) compatible, and automatically compensates for the signal degradation caused by long video cable runs of up to 50 ft (15 m) on its input and can drive HDMI cables on its output to 30 ft (10 m).

From the Bedside to the Cloud: Medical Education goes High-Tech

Vaddio High Definition PTZ Cameras used to Create High-Quality On-Demand Videos for Medical Training

by Stephen McNeil - The Enright Company

When he's not performing ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, Doctor Brandon WinchesteSteve likes to teach others how to do it. For the past several years, he has traveled from his home base at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida, to observe and teach, also called proctoring, other physicians and nurses as they learn new techniques in this specialty. But, he says, he ran into a problem with this training method. "I couldn't get out and reach enough doctors who needed this education," he said. Being reasonably tech-savvy, Winchester set his mind to devising a new model for delivering medical education through cloud-based solutions.
